Alcohol and Blood Sugar: Safety First
Alcohol and blood sugar interact in ways that matter most for people on diabetes medicine, but we did not find a source in our list on alcohol itself, so we give no drink rules. We do cover the verified facts: what low blood glucose is, which medicines cause it, and who to ask.

The gap01
How does alcohol affect blood sugar?
We did not find a source in our list on how alcohol affects blood sugar, so we will not give numbers or drink limits.
That is a safety choice. Advice here changes with your medicine, your food and your health. A clinician or pharmacist can speak to your case.
What we can give you is the low blood glucose facts below, because lows are the risk that needs a fast response.
Lows02
What is low blood sugar and who is at risk?
Low blood glucose means a reading under 70 mg/dL for many people with diabetes, though your own number may differ (NIDDK, Low blood glucose).
| Item | What NIDDK says |
|---|---|
| Mild signs | Shakiness, hunger, tiredness, dizziness, confusion, irritability |
| Severe signs | Loss of consciousness or seizure; treat right away |
| Higher risk | Insulin, sulfonylureas, meglitinides, age 65 or older, kidney or heart disease |
| Quick fix | 15 to 20 grams of carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes, recheck |
All of the above is from (NIDDK, Low blood glucose). Glucagon is used when you cannot treat yourself, and someone should call 911.
Mix-ups03
Why can signs of a low be missed?
Confusion and dizziness are on the low blood glucose list, so someone else may misread them (NIDDK, Low blood glucose).
If you take medicine that can cause lows, make sure friends know the signs and that a faint or confused person needs 911.

What about medicines and supplements?
Ask a pharmacist before mixing alcohol, diabetes medicine and a supplement.
NCCIH says supplements may interact with your medications (NCCIH, Using supplements wisely). ADA warns that interactions can lead to lows or highs (ADA, Vitamins and supplements). Payarmin has no trial showing it is safe with any diabetes medicine.
Keep taking prescribed medicine. The medicine guide lists questions to bring.
FAQ05
Alcohol and glucose questions
Can alcohol cause low blood sugar?
We did not find a source on alcohol in our list, so we make no claim. NIDDK says insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause lows. Ask your clinician how alcohol fits with your medicine.
What should I do if I feel shaky after drinking?
If you have diabetes and a glucose meter, check. NIDDK says to take 15 to 20 grams of carbohydrate for a low, wait 15 minutes and recheck. If someone is faint or confused, call 911.
Is it safe to drink with a supplement?
We have no source that says so. NCCIH says supplements may interact with your medications. Ask a pharmacist about your exact mix, and tell every provider what you take.
Does Payarmin contain alcohol?
The label's other ingredients list glycerin, water, lemon extract, stevia, xylitol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid and natural flavors. Alcohol is not named there. Confirm on your bottle.
