Sugar Cravings and Energy: Why the Afternoon Slump Happens

Quick answer

Sugar cravings and energy dips are common, and a craving alone does not show that your blood sugar is off. Meal timing, sleep, caffeine and activity all play a part. Only a test, such as an A1C, can tell. Supplements are not a proven fix.

The slump01

Why do I crave sweets in the afternoon?

Sugar cravings in the afternoon usually come from a mix of habit, a long gap since lunch, tiredness and stress, not from one single cause.

Most people have a natural dip in alertness in the early afternoon. A sweet snack is quick, easy and tastes good, so the brain learns to ask for it at the same time each day. That pattern is habit as much as hunger.

We cite no study for the exact cause of the dip. It is a common experience, and the list below is a set of things worth checking, not a diagnosis.

01

Long gaps

A light breakfast and a late lunch leave a long stretch with little to eat.

02

Short sleep

Enough sleep is on NIDDK's list of healthy habits (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).

03

Caffeine timing

Caffeine late in the day can cut sleep, and too much brings jitters and a racing heart (FDA, How much caffeine).

04

Sitting all day

Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (CDC, Adult physical activity).

05

Routine

The 3pm snack happens because it always has.

06

Stress

A hard morning makes quick comfort food more tempting.

What it means02

Do sugar cravings mean my blood sugar is off?

No. A craving cannot tell you your blood sugar level, and many people with high blood sugar have no symptoms at all.

NIDDK says people with insulin resistance and prediabetes usually have no symptoms (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes). That cuts both ways. A craving is not proof of a problem, and a lack of cravings is not proof of health.

The A1C test measures your average blood sugar over the past 3 months. Below 5.7 percent is normal, 5.7 to 6.4 percent is prediabetes, and 6.5 percent or above is diabetes (CDC, A1C test). A clinician orders it. A craving does not replace it.

Low blood sugar can feel like a crash: shakiness, hunger, tiredness, dizziness and confusion (NIDDK, Low blood glucose). For many people with diabetes, low means a reading under 70 mg/dL, and your own number may differ. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, that feeling needs a check, not a guess.

Foods and habits03

What foods help with an energy crash?

No single food fixes a crash. Regular meals, water and a short walk are sensible first steps for most people.

We cite no study that ranks foods for an energy dip, so we give simple habits, not a menu. If you live with diabetes, your care team sets your food plan. Follow it.

  • Eat at regular times, so the gap between meals stays short.
  • Pair a sweet with a meal instead of eating it alone.
  • Drink water before you reach for a snack.
  • Walk for ten minutes after a meal. It also counts toward the weekly 150 minutes (CDC, Adult physical activity).
  • Keep caffeine for the morning if it affects your sleep.

The NIH Diabetes Prevention Program found that lifestyle change cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent in adults at high risk, more than metformin did at 31 percent (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program). Its goals were 7 percent weight loss and 150 minutes of exercise a week. The study did not look at supplements. More ideas are on the blood sugar habits page.

A day in hours04

Is it normal to feel tired after lunch?

Yes, many healthy adults feel a dip after lunch. If it is mild and short, it is usually not a reason for alarm.

Track it for a week. Note the time, what you ate, how you slept and how much caffeine you had. A pattern often shows up. The dial below maps a sample 24-hour day with meals, activity and sleep.

A 24-hour day: the drops in the morning before breakfast, a 10-minute walk after dinner, and 7 or more hours of sleep2461218
  1. Morning, before a meal

1 or 2 droppers, as the sales page prefers. The label names no time; tying it to a fixed habit makes a missed day easy to spot.

  2. Move most days

Adults are advised to get 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus two days of muscle work.

  3. Check what your clinician asked you to check

Your meter or lab results are the measure. A supplement label is not.

  4. Night, 7 hours or more

Short sleep makes cravings harder to ignore the next day more than any drops can fix.

Activity guidance from CDC (CDC, Adult physical activity), lifestyle evidence from the NIDDK Diabetes Prevention Program (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program). The time for the drops is a suggestion; follow your label.

The dial shows a sample day. It is not a schedule you must follow.

Sleep05

Can poor sleep increase sugar cravings?

Poor sleep can make a tired day harder, and NIDDK lists enough sleep among healthy habits for lowering diabetes risk (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).

We cite no study that links a number of hours to cravings, so we make no claim about the size of the effect. What we can say is practical. A tired body asks for quick energy. Caffeine can cut sleep and then add to the next day's tiredness (FDA, How much caffeine).

If your sleep is short most nights, say so to your clinician. It can matter more than any bottle on the shelf.

Supplements06

Can a supplement like Payarmin stop sugar cravings?

No supplement is proven to stop cravings, and Payarmin makes no craving claim on its label. No trial has tested it.

The front of the bottle says "Helps Convert Nutrients Into Usable Energy*". That is a structure/function claim the FDA has not evaluated (FDA, Structure/function claims). It says nothing about cravings or an afternoon slump.

The ADA says supplements are not proven as an effective option for lowering blood glucose (ADA, Vitamins and supplements). Gymnema trials in people showed mild drops in fasting glucose, but the overall effect on diabetes has not been shown (NIH LiverTox, Gymnema). Payarmin's gymnema sits 8th in a 200 mg blend, so it holds at most 25 mg.

Guarana and green tea carry caffeine, and the label prints no caffeine amount (MSKCC, Guarana). Late in the day, that could work against sleep. The full label read is on the supplement facts page.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop or change any diabetes medicine because of a supplement or a craving. A reading under 70 mg/dL, or a faint or confused feeling, needs prompt care (NIDDK, Low blood glucose). If someone is faint or confused, call 911.

When to get checked07

When are cravings a reason to see a doctor?

See a clinician if cravings come with new thirst, fast weight change, or tiredness that does not ease.

Also go if your family has diabetes, if you are over 35, or if you carry extra weight at the waist. Those are listed risk factors for insulin resistance (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes). A simple blood test gives an answer that a craving cannot.

  • New or strong thirst, or needing to pass water far more often
  • Weight change you did not plan
  • Shakiness or confusion, especially on diabetes medicine
  • Crashes that return daily and affect work or driving

Ask your pharmacist about any supplement you take. NCCIH says supplements can interact with medicines (NCCIH, Using supplements wisely). Our supplements and diabetes medicines guide has a short checklist.

FAQ08

Sugar cravings and energy questions

Why do I crave sweets in the afternoon?

Usually because of a mix of habit, a long gap since lunch, tiredness, stress and caffeine timing. Most people have a natural dip in early afternoon. We cite no study for one exact cause, so the habits list is a set of things to check.

Do sugar cravings mean my blood sugar is off?

No. A craving cannot show your blood sugar level, and people with prediabetes usually have no symptoms (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes). Only a test, such as an A1C ordered by a clinician, measures it. Cravings alone are not a reason to stop or change medicine.

What foods help with an energy crash?

No single food fixes a crash. Regular meals, water and a short walk help most people, and a sweet eaten with a meal is steadier than one eaten alone. If you have diabetes, follow the food plan your care team gave you.

Is it normal to feel tired after lunch?

Often, yes. Many adults feel a dip after lunch. Track the time, the meal, your sleep and your caffeine for a week to see a pattern. If tiredness is heavy, daily or comes with thirst, see a clinician.

Can poor sleep increase sugar cravings?

Tired people often want quick energy, and NIDDK lists enough sleep among healthy habits (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes). We cite no study that sizes the effect on cravings, so we make no numeric claim. If you sleep badly most nights, tell your clinician.

When are cravings a reason to see a doctor?

See a clinician if cravings come with new thirst, frequent urination, weight change you did not plan, or tiredness that does not ease. For shakiness or confusion on diabetes medicine, check your reading under 70 mg/dL and get prompt care (NIDDK, Low blood glucose).

Does caffeine make an afternoon slump worse?

It can. Too much caffeine brings jitters, a racing heart and poor sleep (FDA, How much caffeine), and poor sleep can deepen the next day's slump. Payarmin has guarana and green tea but prints no caffeine amount, so sensitive people should ask first.
