Alpha Lipoic Acid and Blood Sugar: What the Research Shows

Quick answer

Alpha lipoic acid blood sugar research is not encouraging. Our NCCIH summary reports that a 2019 review found alpha-lipoic acid no better than placebo for blood sugar. Payarmin does not list it. We found no source in our list on alpha lipoic acid and nerve symptoms, so we make no claim there.

The finding01

What did the 2019 review find?

NCCIH reports that a 2019 review found alpha-lipoic acid no better than placebo for blood sugar (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements).

A placebo is a dummy pill. When a supplement does no better than that, the study found no added effect from the ingredient. This matters because some blood sugar products list alpha lipoic acid first.

The same NCCIH page says that for most supplements there is no evidence of a benefit on diabetes or its complications (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements).

Scope02

What does that finding not tell you?

It tells you about blood sugar only, and only as NCCIH summarizes it.

QuestionAnswer from our sources
Does it change blood sugar? No better than placebo in the 2019 review (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements)
Does it help nerve pain or other symptoms? We did not find a source in our list
What dose is safe?We did not find a source in our list
Does Payarmin contain it?No, it is not among the 23 label lines

More in the guides. A review sums up many trials. A single product trial could still differ, but we know of none for Payarmin.

Label reading03

How do you judge a product that lists it?

Use the 2019 finding as a yardstick, then read the rest of the label.

  1. Find the amount

A blend total hides each share. Payarmin does this with 22 lines in 200 mg (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36).

  2. Look at the other lines

Each added ingredient needs its own evidence. Our ingredient guide sorts Payarmin's lines.

  3. Ask about medicines

Supplements may interact with medicines, so tell every provider (NCCIH, Using supplements wisely). Keep taking prescribed medicine.

FAQ04

Alpha lipoic acid questions

Is alpha lipoic acid the same as alpha-linolenic acid?

No. They are different compounds with similar abbreviations. The NCCIH finding we cite concerns alpha-lipoic acid. Read the full name on a label, because a mix-up changes which research applies.

Can alpha lipoic acid replace diabetes medicine?

No. NCCIH says not to replace medical treatment for diabetes with an unproven health product, and its 2019 review found alpha-lipoic acid no better than placebo for blood sugar.

Why do some brands still include it?

We did not find a source on why brands choose it, so we will not guess. A listed ingredient is not evidence of an effect. Judge the label by printed doses and the studies behind them.

Where can I find the original review?

The NCCIH page on diabetes and dietary supplements summarizes it. We cite that page, and we did not open the 2019 paper itself. Ask a librarian or clinician for the original if you need details.
