Blood Sugar Supplements: Berberine vs Chromium
Blood sugar supplements with berberine or chromium get mixed grades from NCCIH: reviews suggest small effects, and study quality varies. Chromium has more NIH detail, including cautions with insulin. Payarmin contains chromium at 0.7 mcg and no berberine, so a berberine versus chromium choice does not apply to this bottle.

Side by side01
How do berberine and chromium compare?
Both get cautious language from NCCIH, and neither replaces treatment.
NCCIH says some studies suggest chromium, cinnamon or berberine might help with blood sugar control. It also says that for most supplements there is no evidence of a benefit on diabetes or its complications (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements).
| Question | Chromium | Berberine |
|---|---|---|
| Review findings | A 2022 review of 16 studies said it may help improve HbA1c (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements) | A 2021 review of 46 studies suggested lower glucose, with variable quality (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements) |
| Largest trial detail | 1,000 mcg a day for 24 weeks: no significant effect (NIH ODS, Chromium) | We did not find a source in our list |
| Safety notes | Case reports of liver and kidney problems and low blood sugar (NIH ODS, Chromium) | We did not find a source in our list |
| In Payarmin | 0.7 mcg, as chromium picolinate | Not on the label |
The dose gap02
How big is Payarmin's chromium dose?
Payarmin's chromium dose is 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving, listed as 2% of the Daily Value.
The adequate intake for adults is 20 to 35 mcg a day, depending on age and sex (NIH ODS, Chromium). So 0.7 mcg is about 2 percent of the highest figure. The 2024 trial used 1,000 mcg, more than 1,400 times as much.
That is our arithmetic, not a claim from NIH. NIH does not comment on 0.7 mcg. The chromium picolinate page explains the label line.
Safety03
Is it safe to add either one to diabetes medicine?
Not without asking your clinician or pharmacist.
NIH says chromium taken with insulin could raise the risk of low blood sugar, and it may add to other diabetes drugs. It also reduced levothyroxine absorption over 6 hours (NIH ODS, Chromium). Low blood sugar below 70 mg/dL needs prompt care (NIDDK, Low blood glucose).
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Do not change a dose because of a supplement. Our guide on supplements and diabetes medicines lists questions to ask.
FAQ04
Berberine and chromium questions
Does berberine have side effects?
Berberine side effects are not covered in the sources we opened, so we cannot list them here. NCCIH says supplements can interact with medicines. Ask a pharmacist about berberine before combining it with diabetes drugs.
Is chromium or berberine better?
The sources we read do not rank them. NCCIH treats both as limited, with chromium evidence from a 2022 review and berberine from a 2021 review of varied quality. Neither is a replacement for treatment.
Can I take chromium with metformin?
Ask your prescriber. NIH notes chromium may add to the effects of other antidiabetes drugs and raise low blood sugar risk with insulin. The fact sheet does not name metformin, so we cannot say more.
Does Payarmin contain berberine?
No. The label lists chromium at 0.7 mcg and a 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients, and berberine is not among them. The sales page names only six ingredients, none of them berberine.
