Blood Sugar Spikes After Eating: Causes and Fixes
Blood sugar spikes after eating are rises in glucose after a meal, and an energy crash can follow. Our source list does not explain what drives spikes, so we do not guess. What we can do is show a meal log you can bring to a clinician, plus the activity and testing facts we did verify.

What we know01
What causes blood sugar spikes after eating?
We did not find a source in our list that explains what drives blood sugar spikes after eating, so we will not name causes.
That gap matters. Many web posts list foods to blame. Without a source, those lists are guesses.
What the sources do cover is testing. A1C averages the past 3 months, so it will not show a single meal (CDC, A1C test). Spikes need a different tool, chosen with a clinician.
Energy crash02
Is an energy crash after eating a low blood sugar sign?
Not necessarily. Tiredness after a meal has many causes, and a feeling alone does not show a glucose level.
NIDDK lists tiredness, shakiness, hunger and dizziness among symptoms of low blood glucose, which it defines for many people with diabetes as under 70 mg/dL (NIDDK, Low blood glucose). Those symptoms are not unique to lows.
If you take insulin, a sulfonylurea or a meglitinide, lows are a known risk (NIDDK, Low blood glucose). A faint or confused person needs 911.
A meal log03
How can you track your own post-meal pattern?
A short meal log turns a vague feeling into data your clinician can read.
| Time | What you ate | Activity after | How you felt |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00 am | Eggs, toast | Commute | Fine |
| 1:00 pm | Rice bowl | Desk | Sleepy at 2:30 |
| 7:00 pm | Pasta, salad | Short walk | Fine |
Rows like these are made-up examples. Keep a week of your own and mark any reading your clinician asked for.

What can you actually do about spikes?
Start with what is sourced: regular activity, then a clinician's advice.
- Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (CDC, Adult physical activity).
- Show your log to a clinician before changing meals.
- Ask about testing if you have risk factors (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Our cravings and energy guide and habits guide go further. Payarmin has no trial showing any effect on spikes.
FAQ05
Post-meal spike questions
What is a post-meal glucose test?
We did not find a post-meal target in our sources. The closest is the oral glucose tolerance test, which NIDDK uses with a 140 to 199 mg/dL prediabetes band. Ask your clinician which test fits you.
Can I check spikes with A1C?
No. The CDC says A1C measures your average blood sugar over the past 3 months, so it cannot show one meal. Home or clinic glucose checks, chosen with your clinician, show shorter swings.
Should I skip carbs to avoid spikes?
We have no source in our list that supports a specific food rule, so we will not give one. Talk with a clinician or dietitian, especially if you take diabetes medicine.
Does a drop in energy mean I need a supplement?
No. A supplement cannot tell you why you are tired, and NCCIH says that for most supplements there is no evidence of a benefit on diabetes. Sleep, activity, meals and testing come first.
