How Much Chromium Per Day? Adult Intakes vs 0.7 mcg

Quick answer

Adults need an adequate intake of chromium of 20 to 35 mcg a day, depending on age and sex, according to the NIH. Payarmin prints 0.7 mcg of chromium per 1 mL serving, which is 2% of the Daily Value. Most people get chromium from food, so a small label amount is not a gap-filler.

The numbers01

How much chromium per day is the adequate intake?

The adequate intake for adults runs from 20 to 35 mcg of chromium a day, set by the Food and Nutrition Board (NIH ODS, Chromium).

It is an adequate intake, not an RDA. The Board could not work out an average requirement, so it used a best estimate. No Tolerable Upper Intake Level was set (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The label02

Where does 0.7 mcg of chromium fit?

At 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving, Payarmin gives about 2% of the highest adult intake, matching the 2% DV on its panel.

The arithmetic below is ours, not the NIH's.

  • 0.7 divided by 35 is 0.02, or 2 percent.
  • One full bottle holds 30 servings, so 21 mcg of chromium in all. A woman aged 19 to 50 has an adequate intake of 25 mcg for a single day.
  • A 2024 trial used 1,000 mcg a day for 24 weeks. That is about 1,400 times the label amount. It found no significant effect on insulin sensitivity, fasting glucose or HbA1c (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The label says one or two droppers a day but not the dropper volume, so we cannot say if two droppers doubles the chromium.

What it means03

Do you need a chromium supplement at all?

Most people get enough chromium from food, according to the Memorial Sloan Kettering summary (MSKCC, Chromium).

That summary also says there is no clear evidence that chromium supplements improve glucose metabolism. The NIH sheet calls the evidence mixed (NIH ODS, Chromium).

So a 0.7 mcg line should be read as a label detail. It is not a dose built on a trial.

Medicines

Chromium with insulin could raise the risk of low blood sugar (NIH ODS, Chromium). Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your pharmacist before adding any supplement.

How do you total your own chromium?

Add the micrograms from every supplement you take. A multivitamin may carry chromium too. Compare the total with the table above.

FAQ05

Chromium intake questions

What is the adequate intake of chromium for a woman over 50?

It is 20 mcg a day for women 51 and older, per the NIH fact sheet. Men 51 and older have an adequate intake of 30 mcg. Pregnancy is set at 30 mcg and lactation at 45 mcg.

Can you take too much chromium?

The NIH set no Tolerable Upper Intake Level, but case reports link chromium supplements to liver problems, kidney failure and low blood sugar. People with kidney or liver disease may be more susceptible. Ask a clinician first.

Is 0.7 mcg of chromium a lot?

No. It is 2% of the Daily Value and about 2 percent of the highest adult intake, by our arithmetic. It is far below the 1,000 mcg a day used in the 2024 trial the NIH describes.

Does Payarmin add up to a full day of chromium?

Not on the label. One 1 mL serving has 0.7 mcg, and the label does not print how much a dropper holds. Even a full 30 mL bottle holds about 21 mcg in total.
