Magnesium and Blood Sugar: How Much Is Too Much From Supplements?
Magnesium and blood sugar is a topic with a firm limit and soft evidence. Our NCCIH summary gives an adult upper limit of 350 mg a day from supplements. We found no source in our list that shows magnesium changes insulin sensitivity. Payarmin lists no magnesium.

The limit01
What is the magnesium limit from supplements?
The adult upper limit from supplements is 350 mg a day, as our NCCIH summary reports (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements).
The figure covers supplements, not the magnesium in food. It is a ceiling, not a target. We did not open a dedicated magnesium fact sheet, so we give no other numbers.
Many products list magnesium, often beside other lines. Count every one, and see our guides hub for related reading.
Worked example02
How can two supplements go over the limit?
Add the magnesium from every product you take, then compare with 350 mg.
The example uses made-up round numbers to show the arithmetic. It is not a real product.
| Product | Magnesium per day |
|---|---|
| Multivitamin | 100 mg |
| Blood sugar capsule | 200 mg |
| Sleep aid | 100 mg |
| Total from supplements | 400 mg, which is 50 mg over 350 mg |
Payarmin adds 0 mg, since the label lists no magnesium. Check our supplement facts for every line.
Research gaps03
Does magnesium improve insulin sensitivity?
We did not find a source in our list that says it does.
The NCCIH diabetes page does not give a magnesium benefit (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements). So we will not borrow one. If a seller says magnesium supports insulin sensitivity, ask for the study and the dose used.
Habits have clearer backing. Regular activity and enough sleep appear in NIDDK's advice on insulin resistance (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes). See our blood sugar habits guide. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your clinician before adding magnesium.
FAQ04
Magnesium questions
Can magnesium cause side effects at high doses?
We did not open a source on magnesium side effects, so we cannot list them. We can say the 350 mg figure is an upper limit for supplements. Ask a pharmacist, especially if you have kidney disease or take medicine.
Does magnesium from food count toward 350 mg?
No. The limit we cite applies to magnesium from supplements, not from food. We do not have a source for food amounts in our list, so we give none.
Is there magnesium in Payarmin?
No. The label lists chromium at 0.7 mcg and a 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients. Magnesium is not named, so Payarmin adds nothing to your daily total.
What should I tell my doctor about magnesium?
Tell them every product you take and the magnesium on each label. NCCIH says to tell all providers about every supplement, because some interact with medicines.
