Prediabetes Symptoms: Why Testing Matters
Prediabetes symptoms are usually absent. NIDDK says people with prediabetes and insulin resistance usually have no symptoms, so the only way to know is a blood test. An A1C of 5.7 to 6.4 percent, or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL, falls in the prediabetes range.

No signs01
Does prediabetes cause symptoms?
Prediabetes usually causes no symptoms, according to NIDDK (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
That is why feeling fine proves little. You can feel tired or hungry for many reasons, and none of those feelings confirms prediabetes.
New thirst or fast weight change is a different matter. Those are reasons to see a clinician soon.
The numbers02
What numbers count as prediabetes?
Three tests define the prediabetes range, and any one of them can flag it (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
| Test | Prediabetes range |
|---|---|
| A1C | 5.7 to 6.4 percent |
| Fasting plasma glucose | 100 to 125 mg/dL |
| Oral glucose tolerance test | 140 to 199 mg/dL |
The CDC gives the same A1C band and notes that the test averages the past 3 months (CDC, A1C test).
Risk03
Who is more likely to have prediabetes?
NIDDK links prediabetes to a set of risk factors, and having several is a reason to ask about a test (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
Body and age
Excess weight or a large waist. Age 35 or older.
History and habits
Family history of diabetes, low activity, smoking, or gestational diabetes.

What does the lifestyle research show?
In the Diabetes Prevention Program, intensive lifestyle change cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent against placebo (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
The goals were losing 7 percent of body weight and exercising 150 minutes a week (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program). Metformin cut the risk by 31 percent in the same trial. The trial did not test supplements.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and use a supplement such as Payarmin only after you have a test result and a clinician's view.
FAQ05
Prediabetes questions
Can you have prediabetes and feel normal?
Yes. NIDDK says people with prediabetes and insulin resistance usually have no symptoms, so feeling normal does not rule it out. Only a blood test shows where your numbers sit.
Does an A1C of 6.0 mean prediabetes?
An A1C of 6.0 percent falls inside the CDC band of 5.7 to 6.4 percent for prediabetes. It is not a diagnosis alone. A clinician confirms with repeat testing and your history.
Is prediabetes the same as insulin resistance?
No. NIDDK describes insulin resistance as cells not responding to insulin the way they should, and prediabetes as blood sugar above normal but below the diabetes range. They often travel together.
Does weight loss matter in prediabetes?
NIDDK says the Diabetes Prevention Program found that losing 5 to 7 percent of starting weight helped lower the chance of developing diabetes. Your clinician can help set a realistic plan.
