Sleep and Blood Sugar: What the Sources Back Up
Sleep and blood sugar are linked in everyday advice, but our sources are thin. NIDDK lists enough sleep as a healthy habit for people with insulin resistance and prediabetes. We did not find a source in our list for how many hours matter, or for how poor sleep changes insulin or cravings, so we do not claim it.

Does poor sleep raise blood sugar?
Poor sleep may be tied to blood sugar, but we did not find a source in our list that shows how, so we make no claim.
The one thing we can cite is NIDDK. Its page on insulin resistance and prediabetes names enough sleep and regular physical activity as healthy habits (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
That is a recommendation about habits. It is not a measurement of what one bad night does to your glucose.

What does sleep have to do with insulin?
NIDDK defines insulin resistance as cells not responding to insulin the way they should (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
The same page lists risk factors: excess weight, age 35 or older, family history, low activity, smoking and gestational diabetes. Sleep is not on that list, and it appears only as a healthy habit (NIDDK, Insulin resistance and prediabetes).
So we cannot tell you that sleep loss causes insulin resistance. We can say that people with it usually have no symptoms, which is why a blood test matters.

How many hours of sleep protect blood sugar?
