Stress and blood sugar are often linked with the hormone cortisol, but we did not find a source in our list that explains that link, so we do not describe it. What we can offer is a plain stress log, the activity numbers the CDC gives, and the testing facts that matter whatever your stress level.

Web posts and supplement pages like to name cortisol. A name is not evidence. Readers should ask which study the claim rests on.

What can you do about stress that has a source?
The CDC asks adults for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, plus muscle work on 2 days (CDC, Adult physical activity).
That page did not state effects on blood glucose or stress, so treat it as an activity target only (CDC, Adult physical activity).

Do supplements calm the stress and glucose link?
No supplement has a source in our list showing that it does.

Stress and glucose questions
What is cortisol?
Cortisol is a stress-related hormone in common use online. Our source list does not describe it, so we give no medical definition. Your clinician can explain it and order a test if one is needed.
Can stress cause diabetes?
We did not find a source in our list that says so. NIDDK names weight, age, family history, low activity, smoking and gestational diabetes as risk factors for insulin resistance. Stress is not on that list.
Should I test more when stressed?
Only if your clinician says so. We did not find a source on testing during stress. If you take insulin or certain pills, ask what to do about low readings under 70 mg/dL.
Does caffeine make stress feel worse?
FDA says too much caffeine can cause jitters, anxiety, insomnia and a faster heart rate. Guarana and green tea are caffeine sources, so check labels when you feel wound up.
